Effluvium Nuisances.—No nuisances of this character were reported.
Want of Air Space, Overcrowding.—In only 9 cases was overcrowding
discovered, all of which were abated before the end of the year. This contrasts
with 30 cases in 1906 and 13 in 1905.
Altogether 176 cases have come under the notice since 1896, and these
have been remedied, This is not a large number considering the numerous
workshops and workplaces in Islington.
Want of Drainage of Floors.—45 cases, generally in laundries, where
the floors were not drained so as to prevent water standing on them, were
discovered. Of these 38 had been remedied at the end of the year. This
number contrasts with 38 in the preceding year and 39 in 1905.
Want of Ventilation.—31 cases were detected, of which 28 had been
remedied when the year closed. These defects were discovered in workrooms.
In the preceding year only 8 cases came under notice, and in 1905, 4.
Sanitary Accommodation.—In 28 cases insufficient sanitary accommodation
was discovered, and in 198 cases it was unsuitable or defective. In
375 instances it was foul and in 19 cases there was no accommodation
provided for the different sexes.
Bakehouses.—There are at present on the register 256 bakehouses (of
which 46 are not in use but which are inspected at intervals), to which 621
visits were paid in the course of the year, as contrasted with 215 in 1906.
These bakehouses were also inspected by the Superintendent and Chief
Sanitary Inspector, Mr. J. R. Leggatt, who reported favourably on their
condition as compared with that in the preceding years.
It is satisfactory to find that there was no occasion to serve notices with
respect to nuisances at these places. The misuse of bakehouses for drying
clothes has been discovered in several instances, and the proprietors who
allowed them to be used in this way have been requested not to do so again.
There is, however, no legal offence committed, although it will be admitted
that it is highly improper conduct.
The following table gives a synopsis of the work that has been done in the last 12 years.
