FACTORY AND WORKSHOP ADMINISTRATION.
In accordance with the requirements of the Factory and Workshops Act,
it is the duty of the Medical Officer of Health to submit an annual report on
the manner in which the provisions of this Act are carried out in the district
for which he is responsible, and in conformity with them he now submits the
following statement:—
Inspectors.—There are 3 Inspectors, 1 male and 2 female, employed on
this work, of whom the male inspector and 1 female inspector look after
factories and workshops where men and women are respectively employed,
while the second female inspector visits the homes of homeworkers, and also
inspects the kitchens or restaurants. Each of these Inspectors have written
reports on their work during the year, which are appended herewith, and
which set it forth very fully.
Inspections and Visits.—The total number of inspections and visits
paid to the several places under the charge of the Inspectors was 10,727,
as contrasted with 6,980 made during the previous year.

Notices Served.—These visits resulted in the detection of 2,303 sanitary
detects, of which 2,026 had been remedied at the end of the year, and entailed
the service of 643 intimation notices and 16 statutory notices. Of these
notices 71 were served on the owners of factories, 292 of workshops, 17 of
work places other than outworkers' premises, 215 of restaurant kitchens, and
34 of outworkers' premises.
In addition to these, 38 notices were served for the abatement of 101
nuisances or defects on outworkers' premises.
