Out of 1,651 cases isolated in hospital, 1,480, or 89.6 per cent., were
admitted to the Metropolitan Asylums Board's Hospitals.
The following are the particulars respecting the isolation of the cases of
disease that have occurred during the year.
Scarlet Fever.—1,216 cases were notified, of which 1,112 were
isolated in hospital, and 984 entered an institution of the Metropolitan
Asylums Hoard. Altogether 91.4 per cent. of the known cases of this disease
were removed to hospital, leaving only 8'6 per cent. to be attended to at home.
It should be pointed out that this is the largest number of cases belonging to
Islington that has ever been isolated in hospital.
In London the notifications were much more numerous than usual, and
caused considerable anxiety to the Metropolitan Asylums Board, so that a
resolution was passed by them calling attention to the continued prevalence of
Scarlet Fever, notwithstanding the extensive isolation accommodation which
they had provided, and praying that the Local Government Board be asked
to cause an inquiry to be instituted into the cause of this disease.
This resolution was brought under the notice of the Borough Council of
Holborn, who addressed a letter to the Islington Council, who referred the
matter through the Public Health Committee to the Medical Officer of Health
for report, which he did shortly after. The following is his report:—
• This subject although reported on in 1908 is dealt with here because it refers to a matter that
occurred in 1907.
