DIPHTHERIA.
Diphtheria, inclusive of Membranous Croup, was notified in 481 instances,
as compared with a decennial average of 614. The attack rate was equal to
1.39 per 1,000 of the population, as compared with one of 1.77 in the 10 years
1897-1906. In London the rate was 1.84 and in the Encircling Boroughs r8o
per 1,000 inhabitants.
Hospital Isolation.—It is again satisfactory to note that patients
suffering from this disease were largely isolated, as many as 404 cases, or 8.40
per cent., having been removed to hospital for treatment and isolation.
Fatality.—42 deaths occured among the 481 cases that were notified, so
that 8.7 per cent. of the patients died. This proportion is slightly higher than
in 1907, when it was 7.3, the lowest rate on record in Islington, but nevertheless
it appears very favourable when contrasted with the rates that obtained in the
10 years 1891.1900, when the fatality averaged 21.5 per cent. of the cases. In
1901 it was 14.7 per cent.; in 1902 11.8; in 1903 it fell to 9.4; in 1904 it was
only 8.1; in 1905 9.7 and 1906 Thus we see that there has been an almost
