too, there was an Islington Market, but it was situated on the east side of
Balls Pond Road (Essex Road), nearly a third of a mile north of Rotherfield
Street.
Although the parish continued to grow rapidly, it was not until January
1st, 1884, that the Registrar General thought fit to further increase the number
of its sub-registration districts for the convenience of the people, at which time
"the district of Islington, consisting of the two sub-districts of West Islington
(population 121,452) and East Islington (population 101,413), was divided into
four sub-districts, viz., Upper Holloway (population (57,946), Islington SouthWest
(population 100,976), Islington South-East (population 01,895), and
Highbury (population 52,048)."* Thus it is seen that the population of Highbury
alone was at this period nearly as great as that of the whole parish in 1841.
This division of the parish remained in force for ten years, until 1900, when
the Registrar General again increased the number of sub-districts by dividing
it into five sub-districts, namely, Upper Holloway, (population 89,049)
Lower Holloway (population 41,618), Highbury (population 62,092), Barnsbury
(population 55,445), and Islington South-East (population 77,666). This change
was accomplished by abolishing the sub-district of Islington South-West, and
dividing part of it into the sub-districts now named Lower Holloway and
Barnsbury, and adding the remaining portion to the sub-district of Islington
South-East.
A further sub-division of the borough, which came into force on August 1st
1901, was made by the Registrar General, who divided the large sub-district
of Upper Holloway into three sub-districts, Tufnell (population 31,995), Upper
Holloway (33,978), and Tollington (33,922), so that there were then seven subdistricts
in Islington, and so they remain at the present time.
The populations of the several sub-districts even now remain very unequal,
for they range from 34,441 (estimated) in Tufnell, to 70,524 (estimated) in
Islington South-East. The last change has, however, been greatly to the
advantage of the residents in the northern part of the borough, who have now
a registrar living in each of its wards. The particulars as to the areas, densities,
and populations of these sub-districts, as well as of the borough, are set out in
Table I.
Wards.—The borough is divided into eleven wards for municipal purposes,
four of which, Tufnell, Upper Holloway, Tollington, and Lower Holloway,
are coterminous with the registration sub-districts and bear the same
names. The populations of the wards vary considerably, although perhaps
