Tubercular Diseases.—Tuberculosis of the Lungs or Phthisis, Tuberculosis
of the Brain or Tubercular Meningitis, Tuberculosis of the Larynx, Tuberculosis
of the Abdomen or Tabes Mesenterica, and General Tuberculosis.
Phthsis.—The returns show that there were 436 deaths registered in the
Borough in 1907, as compared with a corrected average of 537 in the preceding
13 years, or a decrease of 101. These deaths represent a death rate of
1.26 per 1,000 of the inhabitants, as compared with 1.55 in the years
mentioned. They also represent 8.58 per cent. of the deaths from all causes
registered during the year. These are serious figures, although it must be
acknowledged that they have shown a gradual improvement since 1900, when
the deaths numbered 602 and the death rate from Phthisis was 1.79 per 1,000
inhabitants.
