INFANTILE MORTALITY.
During the year, 1,390 children under 12 months old died, and as
in this period 9,556 had been born, the infantile mortality was at the
rate of 145 for every 1,000 of these births. In London, in
1892, the infantile mortality rate was 155, and in the 33 large
towns, 164.
Infantile mortality is very frequently used as a test of the sanitary
condition of a district, and if judged by it, Islington appears to be in
a verv healthy state. Its record is better than London as a whole, and
also than that of the 33 large towns. In the former I find the rate
was (in 1892) 155 per 1,000 children born, and in the latter 161.
The chief items causing these deaths were Measles, 43; Whooping
Cough, 51; Diarrhoea, 111; Syphilis, 23; Tabes Mesenterica, 54;
Phthisis, 25; Hydrocephalus, 22; Cephalitis, 33; Convulsions, 103;
Bronchitis, 173; Pnuemonia, 76; Premature Birth, 162; Atrophy
and Debility, 271, and Suffocation, 45,
