The sulib-soil of the City Road with the ground rent of £8 10s. 0d.
(which had hitherto been paid by the Vestry in respect it was supposed
of the Goswell Road enclosure) attached was also withdrawn from sale,
the Auctioners intimating that differences of opinion had arisen with
respect to the title.
WORK FOR THE UNEMPLOYED.
In November, 1892, a circular letter from the Local Government
Hoard was received by the Vestry in common with other local
authorities throughout the country suggesting the creation of work
with a view to meeting anticipated lack of employment and consequent
distress during the coming winter, and deputations of unemployed
persons were subsequently received upon the subject. The Vestry,
however, did not deem it necessary or advisable to act upon the
suggestion of the Board, but by the employment of extra sweepers
during the winter months gave work and relief in what was considered
a more legitimate manner.
LEGAL PROCEEDINGS.
Eayres v. Chisnell; the same v. The Vestry.
Mr. Eayres' actions have now for some years past formed an item
in the annual reports.
The appeal lodged by him against the judgment of Mr. Baron
Pollock in his action against Mr. Chisnell was heard and dismissed by
the Court on July 19th, 1892.
In December, 1892, Mr. Eayres (suing in forma pauperis) commenced
an action against the Vestry, claiming damages for assault and
false imprisonment.
Gordon v. Williamson.
The particulars of this case will be found in the last annual
report. Mr. Justice Denman, it will be remembered, had given judgment
against defendant who had subsequently appealed.
The appeal was argued before the Master of the Rolls and Lord
Justices Bowen and Kay, oil July 12th and 18th, 1892, when judgment
was reserved, and subsequently Lord Justice Kay delivered the judgment
of the Court reversing the decision of Mr. Justice Denman.
