cost of the collection and disposal of both house refuse and refuse from
the roads resulting from increased charges for freightage, higher prices
of provender, and the advance made during the preceding year in wages,
the latter cause having affected the year with which this report deals to
a greater extent even than it did the preceding one.
The amount paid for the freightage and for shoots for house and
trade refuse and road sweepings was £6,894 15s. 2d., an increase of
£719 14s. 2d. on the previous year.
The contract price for the disposal of mixture and slop was
£6 5s. 0d. per freight, as against £5 10s. 0d. the amount paid during
the greater portion of the previous year, and the contract price for the
disposal of the greater portion of the house refuse was 2s. 5d. and 3s. 0d.
per ton, as against 2s. 0d. and 2s. 3d., the amounts paid during the
previous year.
The receipts for the sale of ashes and breeze amounted to
£273 6s. 10d., an increase of £10 14s. 11d., and for the sale of sand to
£447 15s. 10d., a decrease of £68 17s. 4d. The "tots" obtained from
the house refuse realized the sum of £146 15s. 5d.
The average cost per load for the collection and disposal of house
and trade refuse and road sweepings was 6s. 6¾d., as against 4s. 10½d.
for the year 1891-92.
49,869 loads of house and trade refuse were removed during the
year as against 48,164 loads during the preceding year an increase
of 1,705 loads.
16,900 loads of slop and road sweepings and 2,114 loads of
sludge from the sewers and gullies were passed through the wash mills,
and the sand resulting from this work was disposed of as follows:—

The number of horses in stock at Lady day was 89 and 2 cobs.
14 horses were purchased during the year at a cost of £984 0s. Od.
13 horses and 1 cob were sold for £56 4s. 0d., their average term of
work having been 5½ years.
