lighting by erecting arc lamps in Camden Road up to the boundary
of this Parish.
Mr. Andrew Slatter, at the St. Pancras Electrical Exhibition in
1891, estimated as an example, that the cost of lighting Victoria Street,
Westminster, with 26 Planet arc lamps of 300 actual candle power each,
at a distance of 80 yards apart (in conjunction with incandescent lamps)
would be £151 17s. 0d., reckoning the cost of production at 3½ per
unit, as compared with £252 2s. 6d. the price paid for gas. This is
without taking into account the vast increased illumination of the
street.
The Corporation of Blackpool, which has recently accepted a
tender for plant necessary for an electric light installation on the high
tension alternating current system, propose to erect 110 arc lamps of
2,000 candle power each, the cost of supplying each lamp being
estimated at £12 per annum. As each arc lamp is expected to displace
five gas lamps, costing £3 10s. each per annum, or £17 10s. for the five,
it will be seen that on this basis the actual cost of lighting the lamps
by electricity will be less than gas.
At Hanley it is proposed to erect twenty 2,000 n.c.p. arc lamps (or
thirty 1,200), the annual cost of working such lamps being estimated
at £320. The Borough Engineer states that if 30 arc lamps are
erected, they will displace 55 gas lamps, having a total candle power of
4,000, and costing £304 per annum. The arc lamps, therefore, are
estimated to cost only £16 per annum more than the gas lamps, while
they give an increased illuminating power of 32,000 candles nominal
Assuming that the Vestry decides to light High Street, Upper
Street, Holloway Road (from Highbury Corner to the "Nag's Head "),
and Seven Sisters' Road, with arc lamps placed on each side of the road,
the approximate number of lamps required would be as follows:—
If placed 60 yards apart (diagonally 87 Arc Lamps.
