throughout the year secure a very low rate of charge for any further
consumption. The rates are:—
For the first two hours' consumption of maximum
demand of electricity per day throughout the
year 7d. per unit.
For any further quantity of electricity consumed 3½d. per unit.
Meter rent is 5s. per quarter. Tho Shallenberger meters are used by the
Company. Tho advantages of the high tension transformer system
for distribution over large areas are forcibly demonstrated in the case
of this Company. No less than 15 miles of cables are run overhead,
connecting customers in all parts of Brighton and Hove, extending
as far distant from the generating station as 2½ miles in one direction
and 2 miles in the opposite direction. The whole of these cables
have been erected at a very economical cost. The voltage in tho
mains is 2,000, which is reduced to 100 volts before entering the
houses by means of the Lowrie-Hall transformers. These are fixed
in metal cases outside the houses, and the Committee was informed
by the Engineer, Mr. Philpott, that their efficiency was thoroughly
satisfactory. When the transformers are fully loaded they will give
out quite 95 per cent, of the energy put into them, and 85 per cent.
on light loads, the loss of energy being therefore very small. At
present the Company is supplying about 16,000 lamps and is continually
making further extensions of the mains in order to properly cope
with the demand. One new set of plant has recently been erected
and is now running, whilst another new set is at present in course of
completion. The generating machinery consists of five complete sets
of plant, capable of developing 780 indicated h.p., and including one
small set of 60 h.p. for running at light loads. The large engines
are Fowler's under-type semi-portable, each of 180 h.p., the small
engine for day work being horizontal, and fed by a separate boiler.
The alternators are of the Lowrie Parker make, each of 75 units, and
attached to the small engine is a 35 unit Mordey alternator. The five
dynamos combined are capable of giving a maximum output of 350
units.
The switch-room is complete with all tho necessary instruments and apparatus.
A large number of ara lamps are supplied by the Company in
various parts of tho town. The whole of the works were thoroughly
inspected by the Deputation, and specimens of transformers, meters, &c.
