St. James' and Pall Mall Company.
Your Sub-Committee visited the central station of this Company in Mason's
Yard, Duke Street, St. James's, on the 9th November. The General
Manager and Secretary of the Company (Mr. Fredk. J. "Walker)
together with the engineer kindly conducted the Committee over the
works and gave it all the information in their power. The station
consists of a building of three storeys, built of white brick, standing
in the centre of Mason's Yard and completely isolated from the
surrounding property. The building measures 88 feet by 21 feet.
The engines, boilers and dynamos, are placed in the basement, which
has been enlarged to a very considerable extent by excavation under
the yard, space having been economised as much as possible in the
construction of the building owing to the cost of land in this neighbourhood.
The ground floor of the building is occupied by a store
room, room for batteries, &c., while the second floor is used for offices
for the General Manager, Engineer and clerical staff of the Company
the top of the floor being let at a good rental. The entire plant
consists of 10 engines of 210 indicatedh p. each, and 2 of 80 indicated
h.p. each, all of which are of the Willans and Eobinson central valve
pattern, coupled direct with dynamos by Messrs. Latimer, Clark,
