SANITARY WORK OF THE YEAR, 1892.
Table XV.
This table of the Sanitary work was prepared in the usual
manner showing in the upper portion the number and variety of the
inspections, re-inspections, and calls made by the District Inspectors
during the year, and in the lower portion the amendments effected.
In addition, the Inspectors generally have reported the premises
from which they have found the removal of dust to be necessary on
making their ordinary inspections.
It will be noticed that the total improvements effected were 20,330
compared with 13,555 carried out in 1891. This represents an increase
of 49.9 per cent., almost 50 per cent, and shows conclusively that the
Public Health Department has not been idle.
DISINFECTION.
The practice adopted by the Public Health Committee of carrying
out the fumigation of rooms, free of cost, where infectious disease has
occurred, continued to be very effectual. From September two disinfectors
were kept continuously at work, and for a few weeks three men
were employed. On several occasions, also, and in addition to these
men, it was found necessary to send the man who usually distributes
the disinfectants to assist in disinfecting rooms after infectious disease.
The strain on the Public Health Department has never previously been
so severe. I am glad to be able to say that the work was generally
performed in an expeditious and satisfactory manner.
The following table gives the number of rooms which have been
fumigated by the Disinfector after cases of infectious disease, during
each month of the year.
