Note.—The Births, Deaths and Marriages relate to the year 1889 (viz., 52 weeks from
anuary 1st to December 28th). The records of sanitary work (in accordance with the
Act of Parliament) relate to the year ending March 25th, 1890.
TO THE
VESTRY OF ST. MARY, ISLINGTON.
Gentlemen,
During the year ending December 28th 1889, 9,559 children
were born in Islington, and 4,752 persons died.
Within the same period 2,443 Marriages were celebrated.
The birth-rate therefore for 1889 was 26.8 per 1,000 of the population
(against 27.6 in 1888), the death-rate 13.3 (against 14.0 in 1888),
and the marriage-rate 13.7 (against 13.1 in 1888).
The birth-rate and the death-rate for 1889, are the lowest to be
found in our Islington records. Since 1868, the birth-rate (which was
then 39.4 per 1,000), has been steadily decreasing. There has also
been an equally steady decrease of the death-iate. Thus, in 1874, it
was 20 per 1,000, and it is now 13.3. Steady falls both in birth-rates
and death-rates suggest many questions for consideration, not the least
important of which is the precise value to be attached to death-rates as
proof of sanitary progress.
