WORKHOUSE LANE.
In February, 1889, the attention of the Vestry had been called by
the Guardians to the unsatisfactory condition of the narrow lane leading
from St. John's Road, by the grounds of the Workhouse, into Hornsey
Lane, the letter of their Clerk suggesting that the Vestry should purchase
a portion of the adjoining estate for the formation of a proper
roadway and then obtain powers to close the lane in question altogether.
The Vestry placed itself in communication with the freeholder of
the estate referred to, but finding that bis demands were unreasonable
the proposal for the diversion of the lane had to be abandoned.
At the suggestion however of its Highways Committee the Vestry
caused a notice to be served upon the freeholder for the proper fencing
in of the estate abutting on the lane, and this fencing having since been
carried out the nuisance has to some extent been abated.
NEW STREETS.
1,318 feet in length of roadway have been made, and 5,931 feet
length of footway flagged by the Vestry during the past year, pursuant
to its powers under the Metropolis Local Management Acts. The
