APPENDIX D.
Islington Vestey Depot,
Liverpool Eoad, N.,
October 31st, 1889.
To the Dusting and Slopping Committee.
Gentlemen,
In accordance with the Eesolulion passed at the Committee
meeting, on Tuesday, October 29th, giving me instructions to prepare a full
and complete statement of all particulars relating to the statement made in the
"Northern Light" of Saturday, October 26th, 1889, with respect to fodder
being delivered to the Cornwallis Eoad Workhouse (late Shadwell Eoad) by
Vestry carts, I beg to report as follows:—
In the year 1886 I was Clerk at the Vestry Depot, Liverpool Eoad, and,
as near as I can recollect, it was in the early part of June, I received
instructions from the late Superintendent, Mr. Thomas Collis, to receive, at
the Vestry Depot, for Mr. Furlong, a half-load, = 18 trusses, of hay from
Mr. E. Woodman, of Old Church Farm, Great Stanmore, and also a half-load, =
18 trusses, of straw from Messrs. James Gingell & Son, of Whitechapel; and the
same was to be kept separate in the lofts, and to be supplied and carted as
required to the Shadwell Eoad Workhouse, the quantity of each delivery to be
regulated by Mr. Maynard. Mr. Collis also gave instructions to the horsekeeper
to cut some of the hay into chaff, which was done. Each delivery was
made by the Cottenham Road horses returning from the farriers or exchanging
carts, with the exception of one occasion (July 26th, 1886), when one of the
Liverpool Road dustmen made one delivery, and, according to the wages-book
of that date, was paid 1s. for the same.
