The Committee held in all five meetings, three of which were
occupied in receiving evidence relating to the statements in question.
Seventeen witnesses were examined, of whom seven were called
at the instance of the representative of the "Northern Light." A
verbatim report of the statements of the witnesses is separately
submitted. The names and occupations of the witnesses will be found
in Appendix B.
At an early stage of the proceedings Mr. J. S. Furlong, a Member
of the Vestry, admitted that he was the owner of the horse referred to
in the "Northern Light" of October 26th, 1889, and asked to be
allowed to give evidence and to be heard upon the enquiry. Mr. W.
B. Hodgson, the representative of the proprietors of the "Northern
Light," stated that he proposed to show that the forage referred to was
the property of the Vestry, and he also asked to be permitted to take
part in the enquiry. Under these circumstances the Committee resolved
that after the Committee had (through their Chairman) conducted the
examination in chief, Mr. Furlong and Mr. Hodgson should be allowed
to cross-examine the witnesses.
The documentary evidence not being stated at length in the shorthand
writer's notes, a summary of it is here given.
The Porter's book of the Cornwallis Road Workhouse,
and the extracts therefrom contained in Appendix C.
as verified by the Committee, were produced by Mr,
Davey, Clerk to the Guardians.
The following books and documents were produced by
Mr. Wroot, Superintendent of the Dusting and Slopping
Department:—
A written statement made by him to that Committee
on October 31st, 1889, as entered upon their
Minutes (Appendix D).
Two invoices received by Mr. Wroot for Mr. Furlong
in 1880, when he was acting as Clerk to Mr. Collis, the
then Superintendent (Appendix E).
