Committee "to examine into and report upon the
origin of the various Parish Charities of St. James
and St. John, and the intention of the donors, as
far as can be ascertained, with the view to the
administration of the non-ecclesiastical Charities
by the Vestry."
The Finance Committee appointed a Sub-Committee
to deal with the matter, whose meetings, at
intervals, extended from June, 1895, until April,
1897, when a most voluminous and exhaustive report
was presented, and 500 copies were printed separately
from the Minutes to be sold at 1s. each, so
that any ratepayer could purchase a copy for his
own use and information.
Drainage of Clerkenwell Detached.— The difficulties
in the way of finding an outlet for the sewage,
etc., of this district, having been satisfactorily
overcome, as stated on page 52 of last year's Annual
Report, the Vestry obtained tenders for the work
from nine contractors, whose tenders varied from
£3,951 l1s. 4d. to £7,478, and selected that of Mr.
J. T. Gloag, of New Cross, being the lowest, which
contract he has, together with a further one for
surface water sewers, carried out to the entire satisfaction
of the Yestry. He also laid the drains
from the sewers to the line of frontage of the houses
to be connected, so as to avoid the subsequent
opening of the ground, the cost of which has been
recovered from the several owners. There will also
be a large amount recoverable from the owners for
the cost of laying the new sewers.
By Order,
R. E. PAGET,
Vestry Clerk.
