Cartage.—The horses and carts have also been employed
during the year in carting stone, refuse from gullies, and rubbish.
Had horses and carts been hired for the purpose a
cost of £84 15s. 7d. would have been incurred. Horses and
carts for this purpose have also been hired from Mr. Varney
and Messrs. Heather, Bailey and Co., at a cost of £9 16s. 6d.
Horses.—On the 16th June the horse "White," purchased
in December, 1892, was destroyed, having become unfit
for further work. On the 20th the horse "Abrahams,'' purchased
in April, 1881, and on the 21st the horse "Price,"
purchased in January, 1892, were also destroyed for the same
reason. The horse "Stebbings," purchased in September. 1890,
died while at work, on the 23rd July, from a ruptured blood
vessel in the heart. The horse "Gibson," purchased in October,
1891, became unfit for further London work, and was sold to
Mr. Seymour for light farm work for £4; and on the 6th
December the horse "Hill," purchased in March, 1887, died
