Electric Lighting.—The Vestry in December,
1892, referred it to the Works Committee to consider
the question of the desirability of the Vestry
undertaking the electric lighting in the Parish, and
to ascertain how far the Orders obtained by Companies
for lighting the Parish would affect the question.
The Committee reported that the Board of
Trade had power to grant a license or provisional
order, notwithstanding any previous license or grant
of authority to any Company. The Board of Trade
stated in reply to enquiry that they were unable to
say whether they would be prepared to entertain an
application from the Yestry until they had ascertained
what steps the Companies which had obtained
orders had taken or proposed to take to
give effect to their orders. The Committee also
received a letter from the London Electric Supply
Corporation, which had obtained an order, offering
to surrender their rights in the Parish for the sum
of £1,200. Having regard to all the circumstances
of the case, the Committee reported that in their
opinion it was not desirable for the Vestry to take
any steps at present to supply this Parish with electric
light—an opinion which the Yestry endorsed.
Clerkenwell Detached.—The proposal of the
Local Government Board to transfer the detached
portion of the Parish at Muswell Hill to Hornsey has
been proceeded with and decided during the year.
The last report stated that a sufficient number of
the ratepayers had objected to the Order of the
Local Government Board, which thereupon became
provisional only, and required confirmation by Parliament.
Early in May a Bill to confirm the Order
was introduced into the House of Commons. The
Yestry and the London County Council presented
Petitions against the Bill, and the Vestry communicated
with all the London Members of Parliament
