Council, members of the Vestry, and inhabitants;
the ceremony being performed by J. Hutton, Esq.,
Chairman-Elect of the Council, in the absence of
Lord Rosebery, who was unavoidedly prevented
from being present as previously arranged. Mr.
Hutton stated that the construction of the Avenue
had been in hand since 1885, having been commenced
by the Metropolitan Board of Works, and
that the cost of the Avenue, which is 1,173 yards
long, 60 feet wide, planted with trees on both sides,
and has a subway for gas and water pipes, telephone
wires, &c., throughout its entire length, was as
follows:—
£ s. d.
Gross cost of the improvement 386,916 13 5
Less Receipts from sale of land 33,390 6 7
Net cost of improvement to
30th June, 1892 £353,526 6 10
He also stated that a further amount would be
received in respect of land not yet disposed of.
Gloucester Street and Sekforde Street.
—On the 6th October, 1892, a Deputation of inhabitants
attended the Vestry to urge that Gloucester
Street be continued into Sekforde Street by the
removal of the few houses which now intervene in
Corporation Row, St. John Street, and Sekforde
Street. The Vestry considered the matter, and
had an estimate xnade of the cost of the proposed
improvement, from which it appeared that such
cost would amount to .£4,200, exclusive of trade
interests or costs of paving. The Vestry considered
that the advantage of the improvement was not
commensurate with the cost, and took no further
action in the matter.
