APPENDIX.
Since its opening on November 20th, 1888, the small,
temporary newsroom in connection with the Library has been
attended with a very gratifying amount of success. The
attendance of readers has been steady, and the accommodation
available has very frequently been overtaxed. The class
of readers frequenting the room comprises persons of all kinds,
and the majority of them obviously visit the Library for useful
purposes, as is evidenced by the fact that the higher class
periodicals, magazines and technical journals are chiefly read.
During the 10 days in November on which the newsroom was
open, 1925 readers visited the room. For the 24 days open
in December, 4414 readers attended ; and in January, 1889,
on 22 days, 4959 readers attended. The total number of
visitors for the 56 days during which the newsroom was open
amounted, therefore, to 11,298, or a daily average of 202. Of
these 223 were ladies.
The arrangements for opening a Lending Department in
the present premises are being pushed forward as rapidly as
possible, and it is anticipated that it will be available for
public use in a few weeks from this time.
A List of Donors and Donations during 1888 is added,
together with a list of the various journals and magazines
now to be seen in the newsroom.
JAMES D. BROWN,
Librarian and Secretary,
