Anomalies in Inhabited House Duty.—The
Vestry had before them a letter from the
Vestry of the Parish of St. James's, Westminster,
enclosing copy correspondence they have had with
the Board of Inland Revenue on the subject of the
unequal manner in which the Inhabited House
Duty is assessed on business premises, and forwarding
the following resolution :—" That as the
"Board of Inland Revenue do not hold out any
"hope of a general removal of anomalies in the
"assessment of Inhabited House Duty, the various
"Vestries and District Boards of the Metropolis be
"invited to appoint one or two of their numbers to
"join the proposed deputation from this Parish
"and elsewhere to the Chancellor of the Ex"chequer,
with a view to all premises partly used
"for business purposes, including Boaiding and
"Lodging Houses conducted as such, Workrooms,
"Solicitors' and other professional offices, being
"assessed to the duty of 6d. in the £, and that the
"Vestries and District Boards be also requested
"to seek the aid of the Members of Parliament
"representing their several localities in the
"matter," and inviting the Vestry to appoint one
or two members to join the proposed deputation to
the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and seek the aid
of the Members of Parliament of the locality, to
endeavour to remove the anomalies referred to.
The reference of the matter to their Assessment
Committee precluded the possibility of the Vestry
joining in the deputation which a few days afterwards
waited upon the Chancellor of the Exchequer,
who, however, stated that the question was part of a
much larger one, and could not be separately dealt
with ; but they concurred with the views of the
Vestry of St. James, Westminster, and expressed
their readiness to co-operate with them in any
future action they may take with the like object.
