Coldbath Fields Prison, and asking this Board to take steps to
acquire the site for the purpose of an open space.
In a letter which was addressed to the Secretary of State by this
Board on the 8th June last, in reply to a communication from him,
with reference to the sites of Coldbath Fields and Clerkenwell
Prisons, a suggestion was made by the Board that it would be a
benefit to the inhabitants if, when the present buildings were pulled
down, a portion of the ground can be set apart and preserved as an
open space; and the Board expressed a hope that the Secretary of
State would give to that suggestion his favourable consideration.
The Committee before reporting to the Board on the Memorials
now before them, and without in any way prejudging the decision
that may be come to by tbe Board thereon, would be glad if they
could be favoured with an expression of the views of the Secretary
of State upon the suggestion above adverted to, and with information
as to the terms upon which the site of the Coldbath Fields Prison
could be obtained for the purpose mentioned.
I am directed, therefore, to ask that you will be good enough to
submit this request to Mr. Secretary Matthews.

Sib,
With reference to your letter of the 27th ultimo, relative to the
disposal of the disused Prison at Coldbath Fields, I am directed by
Mr. Secretaiy Matthews to acquaint you that he has now under
consideration an offer for the whole site, and that he would be glad
to know at your earliest convenience how much ground would be
required by the Board of Works for the purpose referred to in the
above-mentioned letter, and what price they would be prepared to
pay for it per acre.
I am to request that you will favour Mr. Matthews with an early
reply on these points.
I am, &c.,
