might be made available in the more immediate locality of the Buildings
above referred to, and the great danger to the children having to cross
Exmouth Street for the purpose of attending school, but without
immediate result. That the inhabitants of Green Terrace and neighbourhood
having become deeply concerned at the prospect of Green
Terrace being taken, convened a public meeting to consider the subject,
which was more crowded and demonstrative in favour of the object in
view (the denunciation of Green Terrace site being taken) than any
public meeting which has been held in Clerkenwell for many years.
That the communications of the inhabitants resulting from this meeting
and further communications from the Vestry to the School Board have
been respectfully received by the majority of that Board, and have led
to the further consideration of the question whether a Board School is
needed at all near Green Terrace, the result of this more mature
consideration being that the School Board has just passed a resolution
by the large majority of 31 to 13 to apply to the Education Department
for authority to abandon the Green Terrace site. That the New River
Company, the freeholders, who had been served by the School Board
with notice to treat for the purchase of the site have most readily agreed
to release the School Board from their obligations under such notice,
being reluctant to part with the property and to have the value of the
surrounding property depreciated by a Board School being established
thereon. That your Memorialists may be considered as friends of the
School Board and its policy generally, never having joined in opposition
thereto in compliance with invitations from other localities with that
view. That your Memorialists therefore very respectfully but very
urgently pray the Education Department of the Privy Council to consent
to the application of the School Board to be allowed to abandon the
Green Terrace site for a Board School.
And your Memorialists will ever pray.
(Signed) ROBERT PAGET, Vestry Clerk.
In reply, Mr. Mundella stated that the Department would
be prepared to sanction the abandonment of the site so soon
as the School Board provide another suitable site for the
requirements of the neighbourhood.
Goswell Road.—The Agreement referred to in the last
Report, as being about to be entered into between this
Yestry and the Vestry of St. Luke's, for the maintenance
of Goswell Road by the two parishes, the dividing line
being opposite Seward Street, Clerkenwell taking the
northern, and St. Luke's the southern side, was duly
