Sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1875.
Extract from the Annual Report of the Local Government Board
for 1883-84.
Up to the 31st of December, 1882, the number of
Authorities who had appointed analysts, with our
approval, was as follows:—
Counties - - 52
Boroughs, under section 10 - 164
„ „ „ „ 11 8
Vestries and District Boards in the
Metropolis - - 39
Up to the 31st of December last the total number
of Authorities who had availed themselves of the
salutary provisions of this important Statute was 265,
two additional boroughs having, during the past year,
made the requisite appointments.
We are still in correspondence with the very few
Authorities who have, so far, not complied with the
provisions of the law in this respect.
The result of the analyses made during the year is
shown in the appended abstract. It will be seen that
the total number of such analyses is 19,648, or about
200 more than in 1882. As the public continue to
avail themselves only to a very small extent of the
provisions of the Acts, the setting of motion of the
machinery provided for the suppression of adulteration
depends mainly upon whether the Local Authorities
