Small Pox death rate per million of intra and 'extraparochial
cases for the last 8 years is as follows:—
London 297
Central Districts 171
Western „ 170
Southern ,, 315
Northern ,, 284
Eastern ,, 433
and that the mean annual death rate for the separate parishes,
selecting individual cases, has been:—for Kensington, 153;
Chelsea, 214; St. George, Hanover Square, 94; Marylebone,
153; Pancras, 212; Islington, 241; Hackney, 571; Strand,
190: Holborn (in which district is Clerkenwell), 189; Shoreditch,
357; Bethnal Green, 426; St. George-in-the-East, 509 ;
Stepney, 651, &c. So that our much maligned parish stands
well in regard to its small mortality from the Small Pox, even
above the renowned parish of Chelsea 106 cases are known
to have occurred in the parish, 73 of which were removed to
Hospitals.
The deaths from Measles were fewer than in the preceding
year ; also those from Scarlet Fever ; while those from Hooping
Cough were in excess. The 7 deaths from Typhus, comprised
1 from Typhus proper, and 6 from Typhoid Fever. The deaths
from Diarrhœa were above the average; 2 of these were
registered as from Cholera—of course, English Cholera.
The number of deaths arising from all causes in infants under
1 year of age, was 416, 49 more than in the preceding year.
These deaths may be considered to form a fair test of general
careful domestic management, and here again, Clerkenwell takes
a good place. In a table published by the Registrar-General,
in which the intra and extra-parochial deaths in each
Parish are included to form a corrected comparison, the deaths
under 1 year to 1,000 births, are:—in Kensington, 148; in

The number of deaths arising from the principal Zymotic diseases in the parish in 1884 was 236, being 21 more than in the preceding year. The number and the causes of the zymotic deaths occurring in Clerkenwell during the last 10 years are exhibited in the following Table-
