the Surveyor, the Analyst, and the Inspectors under
the Sale of Food and Drugs Act, together with the
Statement of Accounts of the Vestry for the same
period.
On the first page of the Report you will find a Statement
of the Rates made for the year for the purposes of
the Vestry, viz., Sewer, Main Drainage, Lighting, and
General, which include the School Board Rate (about
6d. in the £), and also the Rate raised for the Metropolitan
Board of Works, of about a like amount.
The Poor Rate, although made by the Vestry, is
collected and disbursed by the local Guardians or
Governors of the Poor under the Local Act, who furnish
the Guardians of the Holborn Union with funds
for the relief of the Poor, according to precept.
I also enclose copies of the ratepapers on which the
rates have been demanded, as far as I have been enabled
to recover them.
Should any more information be required upon the
subject I shall be happy to furnish it.
Proposed Reform of London Government.
Referring to Sir "William Harcourt's published letter
of the 9th inst., addressed to Mr. William Storr, in
which he appears to invite information on the subject
of the work of the Yestries, I had it in contemplation
to forward him a copy of a Return of Works and Improvements
carried out by this Yestry since its formation
in 1856, and the cost of same, which return
was made out some time ago, at the instance of the
Metropolitan Board of Works, to whom the Annual
Reports of the Yestries are required to be furnished
in accordance with the Act.
