Road, to the Angel, but in consequence of the magnitude of the
schemes already in hand, the Metropolitan Board of Works were
unable to take steps in the matter at present.
Sekforde Street Improvement.—The Vestry also had
under consideration the desirability of memorialising the Metropolitan
Board of Works to remove the obstructions at the north
and south ends of Sekforde Street, with the view of opening up
a more direct communication between the north and south and
south-west London, and the new Farringdon Road Market, but
no decisive action was taken.
St. John Street Improvement, widening of narrow
portion of.—The Vestry also had under consideration the
question of the desirability of widening St. John Street from
Albemarle Street northward, to which attention has been directed
on several previous occasions, but especially by resolution of the
Board of the 4th April, 1878, but after consideration by the
Committee of Works on the 1st November, 1881, it was con.
sidered that the improvement is one which should be carried out
by the Metropolitan Board of Works, as a Metropolitan Improvement,
and the further consideration of the matter as a
Local Improvement was therefore adjourned sine die.
Colney Hatch Lane, Muswell Hill.—In May, 1881, a
letter was received from certain of the purchasers of plots of
land fronting on Colney Hatch Lane, asking that the Vestry
would widen the road to 45 feet throughout, they agreeing to
give up land for the purpose. In consequence of this letter the
Vestry directed that letters be addressed to each of the other
owners of the land fronting on the road, stating that the Vestry
wereprepared to widen the road upon the necessary land being
given up for the purpose. This resulted in an offer being made
by the frontagers on the part of the road which was less than 40
feet, that they would give up the necessary land to make the
road 40 feet wide, provided the Vestry kerb, channel, and drain
