Watering.—This was the first year in which the Vestry did
its own street watering. Five additional horses were purchased
for the sum of £350, making twenty-one in all; and twelve water
vans were obtained for £559, and the Committee think that the
way in which the work was done compared favourably with that
of previous years, when the work was done by Contractors.
Cartage.—In addition to the above, the Vestry's horses and
carts have been largely employed during the year in carting stone,
gully refuse, &c.
Barges.—141 freights of ashes and breeze containing 8,952
chaldrons; 72 freights of slop, containing about 5,040 tons, and
30 freights of hard-core, containing about 1,500 tons, have been
sent away from the wharf during the year. The average price
obtained for the ashes and breeze was 2/2 per chaldron. 45
freights of slop were taken away free; £15 10s. was paid by the
Vestry for the removal of 17 freights; and £10 was received for
10 freights. Of the 30 freights of hard-core, 26 were taken away
free; £1 was paid for the removal of one, and £3 10s. received
for three.
In August, one of the horses, purchased in April of Mr. Russell,
died, after an illness of some weeks, but no purchase has been
made to fill its place.
Four carts, and the van exhibited by Messrs. Hayes & Son at
the Cattle Show, have been purchased during the year. The
carts cost £25 each, and the van £52.
The horses, carts, &c., belonging to the Vestry on the 25th
March were as follows:—
20 horses, 11 vans, 10 carts, 12 water vans.
