Regent's Canal, City and Docks Hallway
Scheme.—The Vestry have also had under consideration this
Scheme, by which it is proposed to construct railways from the
Great Western and Hammersmith and City Railways at
Paddington to the Royal Albert Dock of the London and St.
Katherine's Docks Company, together with junctions with the
Midland and Great Northern Railways, and to acquire certain
property near the northern boundary of the Parish. This Scheme
the Vestry dissented from, and a petition was presented to Parliament
against same, with the view to the insertion of a Clause
in the Bill securing to the Yestry the payment of rates upon the
property taken to, while the works are in course of construction,
and generally to protect the interests of the Parish. The matter
was in this stage on the 25th March, but there is great probability
of the Bill passing.†
London Riverside Fish Market Scheme.—This
Scheme, by which it is proposed to establish a Riverside Fish
Market at Shadwell, has also been before the Yestry. The Bill is
promoted by an influential section of the fishermen on the east
coast, but is opposed by the Corporation of London, who claim a
right under a charter of Edward III. to prevent the opening of
any new market within seven miles of the City. The Vestry
petitioned in favour of the Bill, which on the 25th March was
making good progress in Parliament.***
Chalets.—In December the Vestry appointed a Special
Committee to consider the proposals of the Chalet Company to
provide lavatory and water-closet accommodation in the public
thoroughfares, especially for women, by the erection of light
ornamental structures, and, after consideration, gave the
Company permission to erect one of their Chalets on Clerkenwell
Green.
