With regard to the dangers of tobacco smoking the following
points are now considered relevant.
"Three quarters of the men and half the women in Britain
are now regular smokers and the number of people dying each year
from lung cancer has been increasing very rapidly. Heavy cigarette
smokers have thirty times the death rate of non-smokers.
Once people become addicted to smoking it becomes a drug
habit and difficult to break off. That is why young people should
never start.
Lung cancer is a particularly unpleasant way of dying and
smokers'lung cancer often causes death in the prime of life.
It has been shown that the examples of parents especially of
mothers who smoke may encourage children to do the same".
