FOOD HYGIENE (Cont.)
upon this new legislation. The general standard of food
hygiene had reached a satisfactory level as a result of
constant pressure under earlier powers, and the work went
steadily on.
Generally speaking the traders in the district have
co-operated well with the Council for many years in efforts
to "bring the food shops up to a good standard, and the results
are there for all to see.
One of the yet unsolved problems is that of van sales
and deliveries of "open" foods such as bread, fish, fruit and
meat which are not always carried out with the attention to
good hygienic practice which is being sought. There is not
the slightest doubt that the final rounds in this contest
will he settled by public opinion. Legislation has its
limitations, but once the public decides that it will no
longer tolerate some of the less desirable habits of bygone
days which are dying all too slowly the matter will be
quickly cleared up.
