The defendant was fined £5 in each case.
Proceedings were also taken against four
traders for alleged offences against the Surbiton
(Sale of Sugar Confectionery, etc.) Shops Order,
1938, made under the Shops Act, 1928.
The bench held that, as the provisions of the
1912 Act had not been complied with in making the
Order, the summonses must fail, and they were
accordingly dismissed, each defendant being
allowed two guineas costs.
PUBLIC MORTUARY.
During the year, thirty-five bodies were
received into the mortuary, thirty-three post
mortem examinations carried out, and twenty-two
inquests held.
The Mortuary was closed at the end of the
year for extensive alterations and modernisation.
GENERAL.
During the year there were several changes in
the technical and administrative staff.
From September onwards, a check was enforced
on the activities of the Department by reason
of the International Crisis, and subsequent Civil
Defence work. Normal procedure has not yet been
resumed, but every effort is being made to keep the
work of the Department up-to-date.
The Minister of Health requires information
in respect of sites used for camping in the Borough
during the year, but there are no established sites
and no licences have been issued under section 269
of the Public Health Act, 1936.
