Annual Report of
The Medical Officer of Health
for 1938
Public Health Department,
2, Shalston Villas,
Surbiton.
July, 1939.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
Borough of Surbiton.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have pleasure in submitting my seventeenth
Annual Report dealing with all matters appertaining
to the health of the people residing in the
Borough of Surbiton. Owing to the extraordinary
amount of work devolving upon this Department
by reason of Civil Defence measures, the barest of
facts only are contained in this year's Report.
The population of the Borough is still
increasing steadily due to the influx of people into
the new housing estates being constructed in the
district. The chief areas of development are Hook
and Chessington, where many houses of the smaller
type are being built, though in the older part of the
Borough the erection of large blocks of flats continues.
New factories have been built in the
neighbourhood of the Kingston By-Pass Road, and
some of the existing ones are being enlarged.
