This gives n mortality of 2'67 per 1,000 inhabitants for one year and under, and 4T per
1,000 inhabitants for under five years, comparing with 2'0 and 3'0 respectively for 1894.
The mortality at and over 65 years gives 2.54 per 1,000 inhabitants. No comparison can
be made in this case with previous years, as up to the end of 1894 60 was the time of life taken
instead of 65, as at present.
The Infant death-rate (under one year) gives the rate of 133.97 per 1,000 births registered.
This is higher than the rate for the previous year. This is partly to be accounted for by the
larger number of deaths from either prematurity or debility from birth. This rate, 133.97,
compares with 166.0 for London, with 182.0 for the 33 large English towns, and with 193.0
for the 32 Provincial towns.
