The asphalting of several footpaths passing behind streets of houses, as in the
rear of Warwick Road, Crown Road, and Sidney Road, is worthy of being recorded
as a sanitary improvement, for these passages are much used as playgrounds by
children, and the evils arising from such whilst in an unpaved condition are well
recognised.
The erection of buildings on land adjacent to the Belmont Asylum for the
stabling of horses used in the preparation of Diphtheria Anti-toxin has received the
active consideration of the Sanitary Authority during the year. Although one cannot
advise that any appreciable danger is likely to arise from the process of manufacture,
it is to be regretted that a site was not chosen by the Metropolitan Asylums Board
where the buildings would have been less conspicuous and unlikely to prove a
perpetual eyesore to the many residents in the immediate vicinity.
Appended are the Sanitary Inspector's report of nuisances abated, etc., various
tables of statistics, and meteorological notes, compiled from records taken by
F. Campbell Bayard, Esq., of Wallington, and the Surveyor at the Sutton Sewage
Farm, to whom I tender my thanks for the particulars supplied.
GEO. BOWER, D.P.H.,
Municipal Offices, Medical Officer of Health.
Sutton, Surrey.
