I have found the examinations of the greatest
interest and value. It occasionally happens that a
case presents some doubt, and, if on examination, the
diphtheria bacillus should not be found, precaution
can be taken to separate the patient as much as
possible, and on subsequent examinations, if found free,
(14)
disease in some of the cases. One case sent in as
typhoid, but which proved to be blood poisoning, is
not included, and is returned under the head of other
diseases; it was fatal, and the post-mortem examination
revealed severe inflamation of the surface of the
heart, pleurisy and peritonitis, but no lesions affecting
the interior of the intestines, the mucous membrane
appearing quite healthy.
BACTERIOLOGY.

Feeling the great importance and the advantage it would be to be able to make bacteriological examinations of the mucous from the throat, I received sanction from the Council to purchase the necessary appliances.
