Birth-rate.—The number of births registered in the District
during the year was 435. After correction for inward and outward
transfers the "nett" number of births was 542, and the Birth-rate
for the District was 15.0 per 1,000 of the population. The Birthrate
for the year for England and Wales was 17.8, and for
London 17.1.
The birth-rate of 15.0 per 1,000 of the population for 1926
is a slightly higher one than1 was recorded in the two previous
years, that for 1925 having been 14.2, and for 1924, 13.9.

Distributed according to sex and legitimacy, the births were as follows:—

Male.Female.Total.
Legitimate279241520
Illegitimate101222
Total289253542

Death-rate.—The number of deaths registered in the Urban
District during the year 1926 was 260. Of these 27 were deaths
of persons who were not "residents" of the District, and 233
were deaths of "residents." To obtain the correct number of
deaths representing the true mortality amongst the population
it is necessary to add 147 deaths of "residents" whose deaths
occurred outside the Urban District.
The corrected number of deaths therefore belonging to this
District is 380. This number represents a death rate of 10.5 per
1,000 of the population. The death-rate for the year for England
and Wales was 11.6, and that for London also 11.6.
The death-rate for 1926 compares favourably with the rate
in the District during previous years.
