In 1904 it was above the average for England and Wales, in
1905 it was about the same as the rest of the country, and since
then there has been a gradual improvement in comparison with
the rest of the country.

The general death rate was over 11 per 1,000 per annum in the three years 1904-5-6. Since then it has fluctuated between 8-6 and 10-9 compared with 13-3 and 15-1 for England and Wales.
