The Pumping Station adjoins the Markfield Estate, and when
the Lea overflowed its banks in February the water found an entrance
to the pump room, extinguished the engine fires, and the sewage was
damned back so that it escaped from the manholes and mingled with
the waters of the Lea.
The question of the drainage of the Lea Valley is under the
consideration of a Committee appointed by the Ministry of Health
A Bill is now before Parliament asking for powers to make preliminary
surveys in connection with the matter.
The surface water from the Southern portion of Tottenham
drains into the Stonebridge watercourse. This stream also takes the
run-off from a considerable area of land in the adjoining hilly district
of Hornsey. The stream is now culverted for almost the whole of
its length, but near its outfall into the River Lea is still open, very
irregular is cross section, and inadequate to deal with the flow in
heavy rainfall. The Council has approved a scheme for the improvement
of this portion of the stream, and will shortly be inviting tenders
for the work.
Scavenging. This sanitary measure is undertaken by the Engineer's
Department directly. House refuse is collected in moveable dust-bins
and emptied w eekly by the Council's employees into horse-drawn vehicles
to be conveyed to the Council's Refuse Destructor. The horse-drawn
vehicles will shortly be replaced by motor vans.
The Council has had under consideration the best means of
dealing with the clinker extracted from the Destructor, and it is anticipated
that in the reconstruction of roads, the erection of houses, etc.,
much of the accumulated material will be disposed of advantageously.
POPULATION.
The population of the district at the last census (1911) was 138,326.
In 1919 it was estimated by the Treasurer to be 152,508, and the
following table kindly supplied by him shows the distribution in Wards.
