INFANTILE MORTALITY.
This death-rate is based upon the number of deaths
of children under one year of age, and is expressed as a
proportion of such deaths to the births registered during
the same period.
The total number of such deaths belonging to
Teddington for 1906 is 53. This is slightly greater
than the number in recent years but the rate of infantile
mortality is less than the average infantile death-rate for
the previous ten years. This is due to the fact that the
numbers of births is considerably in excess of the number
for other years.

The factors which have influence in causing the
deaths of infants are complex. Probably meteorological
conditions have influence in any one year in producing
a higher or lower number of infants' deaths. Thus,
during the year 1906, 18 infants died of Diarrhoea, and
14 of these deaths occurred in August and September
when the weather had been very hot for many weeks.
