Wimbledon Urban District Council.
SANITARY DEPARTMENT.
ANNUAL + REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
FOR THE YEAR ENDED DECEMBER 31st, 1904.
Gentlemen,
Herewith I submit my Annual Report on the health and
sanitary condition of the Urban District of Wimbledon for the year
ending December 31st, 1904.
In the following Report it will be found that the health of the
District, as measured by the death-rate, has not been so good as in
the previous year, the rate having increased from 8.4 to 10.2 per
thousand of the population per annum; but, compared with the
average of the past ten years (11.2) it must be considered satisfactory,
especially taking into account the large increase of population, viz.,
from 30,000 in 1894 to 47,000 in 1904 and the consequent increase in
density, or in other words, the number of persons per acre. It will
be remembered that the year 1903 was a most exceptional one
throughout England and Wales, the death-rate for Wimbledon being
the lowest ever recorded during my 33 years as Medical Officer of
Health.
Population.
The calculations for the death and other rates in the tables of
this Report are based on a population estimated to the middle of the
year as 47.719, these being the official figures given at the public
inquiry ordered by the Privy Council in connection with the petition
for the granting of a Charter of Incorporation.
Births.
The number of births registered was 1142 (596 males, 546
females), which is 62 less than last year, and equal to a birth-rate of
23.9 per thousand per annum, being 2.6 below the average for the
past ten years. The corresponding fate in England and Wales for
the same period is given as 27.9 in the report of the Registrar
General.
