They have been inspected by myself once, and by the Sanitary
Inspector several times, with a desire to help the occupies
by advising upon any suggestions made by them for alterations
to their bakehouses, with a view to obtaining the necessary certificate
of fitness.
House
Refuse
Collection
and
Disposal
The alterations at the Electric Lighting Station, which prevented
the working of the Refuse Destructor, were completed during
the year, since which time the whole of the sludge from the sewage
presses and the house refuse has been burnt practically as produced.
In consequence of the duplication of work involved in the
investigation of complaints of non-removal of dust, both by the
Surveyor's and Sanitary Departments, it was decided that for the
future this should be dealt with by the former, by whom the
weekly collection is supervised.
The large quantity of house refuse (in respect to which
several complaints were received) which had accumulated on the
Sewage Farm during the alterations at the Electrical Generating
Station, is being removed and used for the purpose of making
up a low lying portion of the farm.
Paving
of Yards
The carrying out of this work has again received considerable
attention. The portion of the yards immediately around ihe
walls of the back additions of 101 houses has been paved with
cement or tar-paving, usually of a width of not less than 3 feet,
and is a great benefit to the health and comfort of the tenant.
House
Drainage
The drains of 142 houses and premises have been entirely
re-constructed, and laid to stand the water test, with manholes,
etc., for inspection and cleaning purposes.
