Wimbledon Urban District Council,
SANITARY DEPARTMENT.
ANNUAL REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
FOR THE YEAR ENDED DECEMBER 31st, 1902.
Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my Annual Report for the year
ending December 31st, 1902, with statistical returns of deaths and
infectious diseases in the District, the methods adopted for the
prevention of disease, and the general work of the Sanitary Department.
Its reputation as an exceptionally healthy one is well
maintained, as evidenced by its low death rate.
Population
The calculations for the death and other rates in the tables
herein are based on a population estimated to the middle of the
year as 43,000, and has been checked on the assumption that the
birth rate has remained the same for a series of years as it was
found to be at the time of the last census. This figure has been
adopted having in view the fact that when the census was taken
both in 1891 and 1901 the population was found to be considerably
lower than had been estimated.
Births.
The total number of births registered was 1,144 (577 males,
567 females), which is 70 more than last year, equal to a birth rate
of 26.6 per 1,000 per annum, being .81 higher than last year.
The birth rate in England and Wales for the same period is given
as 28.6 in the report of the Registrar General.
Deaths.
The total number of deaths registered were 455 (203 males,
252 females), equal to a death rate of 10.5 per 1,000 living per
annum.
