Of the total 8,370 births registered in the Borough, 4,118
were attended by certified midwives attached to the Institutions of the
Plaistow Maternity Charity—
2,618 were attended from Howard's Road
1,500 „ „ „ Lansdowne Road
932 births were attended by Certified Midwives in private practice,
of whom 11 qualified for certification on the Midwives' Roll by
examination and 12 were enrolled by reason of their having been in
active practice prior to the passing of the Act.
Infant Mortality.—Much has been done of recent years to
inspire interest in the question of providing the best means of
combating with the great waste of infant life, and although the recent
summers have been very favourable to the newly born, there is little
doubt some of the improvement which has taken place in the infant
mortality rate has been the result of painstaking visitation and the
steady infusion of knowledge.
