Smoke Nuisances.
January 1st to December 31st, 1907.
Northern Division of the Borough—
Number of hourly observations 2,932
,, emissions of dense black smoke 569

the hour 55
Southern Division of the Borough—
Number of hourly observations 1,827
,, emissions of dense black smoke 706
,, „ exceeding 10 minutes during
the hour 145
The above observations were made by the Council's Inspector
under the Shop Hours Acts, but in addition 20 lists of observations
were received from the Coal Smoke Abatement Society and considered
by the Public Health Committee.
Two summonses were issued in respect of Smoke Nuisances, but
these were withdrawn on the Medical Officer of Health discovering
that each of the firms were, in fact, in the process of installing electric
plant with a view to the prevention of smoke nuisance.
Shop Hours Acts and Seats for Shop Assistants
Act.—During the year, 1812 shops have been visited, when the
following infringements of provisions of the Acts were discovered:—
In respect of excessive hours of employment 17
„ non-exhibition of Notice 201
„ want of proper seats 1
