Town Hall,
West Ham, E.
26th June, 1906.
Sir,
ENTERIC FEVER.
I beg to make a special report to you on an outbreak of Enteric
Fever in the County Borough.
During the past few months the notifications of Enteric Fever
have been less than the average, and during the first fortnight in the
month of June numbered only four, viz.:—two in the week ending
June 2nd, and two in the week ending June 9th. During the second
fortnight in June, however, 52 cases of Enteric Fever were notified,
viz:—13 in the week ending June 16th, and 39 in the week ending
June 23rd. By far the greater number of these 52 cases occurred
within two wards of the Borough, viz:—the Hudson Ward and the
Custom House Ward.
I enclose herewith a map of the County Borough showing the
Hudson Ward marked in blue and the Custom House Ward marked
in red, and the approximate position of each of the above 52 cases
marked with a red cross.
The families attacked belong entirely to the working-class,
inhabiting mostly two-storey houses let to two families.
The heaviest incidence of disease has occurred in males and in
children—32 males and 20 females being attacked. The age incidence
is given below:—
