I have visited these Schools at various times and made the yearly
official examination of all the children as required by the Defective and
Epileptic, and Blind and Deaf Children's Acts.
The Defective Centre for boys has been removed to very much
improved premises in the north-east of the district, but they unfortunately
lack in equipment what defective boys much need—the
provision of hot and cold baths.
The health of these children has been invariably good, and they are
supervised by women teachers, who show great tact and sympathy in
dealing with them.
Sanitary Condition.—Special care is taken by the Education
Committee that this is as perfect as possible, and the Head Teachers
are expected to send in '' Sanitary Returns " monthly, showing the condition
of the Schools under their charge.
As nearly all the Schools are quite modern, or have been recently
brought up-to-date, the defects found are usually of a trivial character.
A systematic inspection of all the sanitary fittings of each School is
made yearly by the Chief Sanitary Inspector and his assistants, and any
defects found are notified to be remedied by the Education Committee.
I personally visit " the offices " of every School from time to time, and
have found them generally clean and tidy.
An occasional fouling of a seat or inadequate urinal flushing was the
most serious condition found.
'Water Supply.—The water for lavatory and drinking purposes
is that supplied by the Metropolitan Water Board, and is in conformity
with the suggestions of the Board of Education as laid down in their
Building Regulations.
Medical Supervision of the Schools.—The action taken
in relation to the health of the Scholars, and for preventing the spreading
of infectious diseases, has been similar to that of 1907, and has been
partly detailed under the headings "Infectious Diseases" and "Measles
and Whooping Cough."
