In March, Miss Lamb took up her duties as Inspector and Nurse
Visitor for Infectious Diseases, and her appointment has been a good
one. She has carried out her work intelligently, well, and without
friction, and by making nearly all the investigations for the removal and
isolation of patients, the disinfection of premises and for school and
other purposes, she has relieved the Sanitary Inspectors to that extent,
enabling them to devote more attention to work appropriate to
their training.
In March, Miss Portlock, who had been engaged with work under
the Factory and Workshop Act and as Health Visitor, resigned, and
was succeeded by Miss Davis, who took up her duties on the 1st
of September. The delay in appointing Miss Davis resulted in an
accumulation of work that prevented her visiting and addressing the
various mothers at their "Meetings," and the time for Lecturing to
the Senior Girls in our Schools had already gone by.
The senior and junior Clerks resigned towards the end of the year, and
were replaced by others who could not have had any knowledge of the
work as carried on during the year, and the consequence was that all the
figures, rates and details in connection with this report had to be made
out by myself at my own home and in my own time.
Might I respectfully suggest that your Public Health Department be
not made a training school for other districts, and that the same
inducements to stay be offered to good officials as tempt them to
go elsewhere?
I beg to remain, Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
J. J. CLARKE.
